For UNTITLED, ART San Francisco 2020, Chambers Fine Art is pleased to present recent works by Fu Xiaotong, Ho Sintung, Pixy Liao, Wu Jian’an and Yan Shanchun.

Born in Shanghai, China, Pixy Liao received her MFA in photography from the University of Memphis in 2008. It was within this completely new and foreign environment that she met her boyfriend-turned-muse Moro – inspiring a body of work that called Experimental Relationship. The ongoing project is a staged documentation of their relationship, now spanning over 13 years, in which Liao creates various intimate, playful, and witty tableaux that often place her in a position of power over Moro, in a subtle reversal of gender roles.

Born in Beijing in 1980, Wu Jian’an graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing in 2005 where he studied under Lu Shengzhong from whom he developed his fascination with the traditional Chinese craft of paper cut. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Experimental Art at CAFA. For Untitled we will present a new series of Wu Jian’an’s 500 Brushstrokes, spectacular abstractions in which Wu collages ink and watercolor brushstrokes, each meticulously cut out by hand and arranged into intricate compositions.

Yan Shanchun began his West Lake series in 2005. One of the most famous and beautiful landscapes in China, the West Lake region of Hangzhou provides the thematic content of both his paintings and prints. Rejecting the traditional media of oil on canvas or ink on paper, Yan evolved a hybrid technique in which his imagery emerges from multiple layers of sanding the plaster powder surface on which he paints, allowing only glimpses of landscape motifs to emerge.

Fu Xiaotong is a graduate of the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, after which she completed her postgraduate studies in the Department of Experimental Art, Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing (CAFA). In her recent series of works on hand-made paper, she creates abstract biomorphic forms through an extraordinarily labor-intensive technique, excavating the paper with a needle many thousands of times. From the accumulation of pin-pricks made at different angles, the forms slowly emerge; images based on animal skin patterns, cellular structures, and coral formations.

Born in 1986 in Hong Kong, Ho Sin Tung has lived, studied and based in Hong Kong ever since. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Fine Arts Department of The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2008. Ho’s work is multidisciplinary and cross-media. Her two-dimensional work predominantly uses pencil, graphite and watercolor in combination with found and ready-made images – including the use of stickers, maps, charts, rubber-stamps and timelines. These are reinterpreted to narrate stories of places, relationships and periods of time often within a considered, objective historical setting.
