This catalog documents a new development in Hong Lei’s work as he moves from photography to painting. Although the imagery of Chinese gardens and landscapes derives from the artist’s photographs, he used fabric dye on silk in three large paintings and a series of fifteen smaller vertical works which also incorporate embroidery. A large installation The Winter Solstice (Dongzhi) executed in clay and ink was created specially for the exhibition at Chambers Fine Art Beijing.
