This catalog was published to accompany a major exhibition of new paper cuts by Wu Jian’an in Beijing and New York. Further developing his mastery of this ancient technique, Wu created seven large three-paneled hangings, using 186 components in different arrangements to create highly personal fantastic images. In Rainbow and associated works, Wu uses multiple layers of brightly colored paper in a dazzling display of virtuosity. Haun Saussy’s introductory essay provides insights into the iconographical background. Text in English and Chinese.
