Marcel Duchamp’s Boîte-en-valise, a self-produced retrospective consisting of miniature reproductions of his key works, is a touchstone of contemporary art. In this exhibition, the valise is shown for the first time in Beijing with additional context provided by related works and a special selection of works by Chinese artists connected to this masterpiece. Taking its title from the subtitle of the boîte-en-valise itself (“From or by Marcel Duchamp or Rose Selavy”), this exhibition is both the most comprehensive exhibition of Duchamp’s work ever mounted in China, as well as an investigation into his lingering influence on the development of contemporary art in China. The exhibition includes works and pieces of archival material by and about Duchamp, as well as works by 17 Chinese artists.
Includes work by Ai Weiwei, Hong Hao, Song Dong, Yin Xiuzhen, Taca Sui, Zhao Zhao, Zheng Guogu
